I read that Prince William has decided not to wear a wedding ring following his marriage to Kate Middleton. According to royal sources, ‘Prince William isn’t one for men’s jewellery, he
doesn’t even wear a signet ring and decided he didn’t want to. It really is just down to personal preference.’

Prior to the Second World War it was unheard of for men to wear wedding rings. It then became customary for soldiers serving overseas to wear a wedding band to remind them of home and their commitment to their wives and families.

Lots of men either dislike wearing jewellery or feel uncomfortable wearing it because of effete connotations. But it seems to me that Prince William will have to get used to it, because sometime in his life he is going to have to wear a sodding great crown on his head with an bejewelled orb in one hand and sceptre in the other. The sceptre is topped off with a 530-carat diamond, known as the Great Star of Africa and the second largest faceted diamond in the world.

To prepare himself for this day, perhaps Kate Middleton should give William a silver torque with an engraved message on the inside. It will be hallmarked with some royal symbols that William should be familiar with together with the year it was made which will be the year he was married. In future years he will be able to look at the hallmark and work out that the letter ‘m’ is 2011.

Silver cufflinks are a popular wedding gift from bride to groom and if Kate was to come to us we could engrave these with her name on one link and his on the other side. We can also engrave a short message, such as ‘I’ll Always Love You William’.

If William is not prepared to be seen wearing any jewellery at all, he could always be given a pair of silver collar stiffeners on which a much cheekier message could be engraved out of public gaze!
