Where are your wine coasters made?
Our sterling silver wine coasters are handmade by Hersey & Son Silversmiths in our workshop using traditional silversmithing techniques. Each wooden base is sustainably sourced and turned in the UK by skilled wood turners before being fitted with a sterling silver gallery and hallmarked.
What wood do you use?
Our wine coasters are available with sustainably sourced Sapele, Oak or Walnut bases. Sapele is a hardwood from the mahogany family, valued for its rich colour and attractive grain, while Oak and Walnut each offer their own distinctive character.
What bottle sizes do your wine coasters fit?
Our wine coasters are available in a range of sizes to suit everything from standard wine bottles to champagne and magnum bottles. Please refer to the dimensions on each product page to choose the correct size for your bottle.
Can a wine coaster be engraved?
Yes. Most of our sterling silver wine coasters can be engraved with initials, names, dates or a personal message, making them popular wedding, anniversary and retirement gifts.
Are your wine coasters hallmarked?
Yes. Every sterling silver wine coaster is fully hallmarked in accordance with UK hallmarking regulations, confirming the purity of the silver.
Why is it called a wine coaster?
Wine coasters first appeared in the eighteenth century. Early examples were fitted with small wheels, allowing the bottle or decanter to glide smoothly across the dining table. As designs evolved, the wheels were replaced with a soft baize covering on the underside, protecting polished table surfaces while allowing the coaster to slide with ease. Today, the green baize remains a traditional feature of a well-made wine coaster.
How should I care for my wine coaster?
Simply wipe the silver and wooden base with a soft cloth after use to remove any moisture or wine. The wood is protected with a durable finish and will naturally develop character over time. The underside is covered with traditional green baize to help protect polished table surfaces when the coaster is moved.
What occasions are wine coasters suitable for?
Sterling silver wine coasters make thoughtful gifts for weddings, silver wedding anniversaries, retirements, birthdays and housewarmings. Optional engraving allows each piece to be personalised to mark a special occasion.
