The History and Meaning of St Christopher Medals – Patron Saint of Travellers

st Christopher silver jewellery.

St Christopher Silver Jewellery has always been popular here at Hersey & Son and we first wrote a news item about the History of the St Christopher back in June 2017. We thought we should bring it up to date as we have a much larger selection of St Christopher Silver Jewellery for purchase nowadays.

The story of St. Christopher and the medallion named after him has inspired travellers and gift-givers for centuries. Today, St. Christopher pendants are still worn for protection, faith, and even as a symbol of adventure. But who exactly was St. Christopher, and what does the medal mean?

Who Was St. Christopher?

St. Christopher is one of the most popular saints. Legend, has it that he was a Canaanite named Reprobus, over seven feet tall, with immense strength and a fearsome appearance. He lived during the third century, in the time of Roman Emperor Decius.

The Legend of St. Christopher Carrying Christ

The best-known story of Christopher talks about what happened when carrying a child across a dangerous river. As he waded through the rushing water, the child grew heavier with each step. Fearing they would both drown, Christopher asked why the child weighed so much. The child revealed himself as Jesus Christ, explaining he carried the weight of the world’s sins.

Despite the burden, Christopher persevered and safely reached the opposite bank. Christ then told him to plant his staff in the ground after which it blossomed into a flowering tree, a symbol of new life and faith. While this legend is thought to draw its inspiration from ancient mythology, it evolved into becoming one of Christianity’s most enduring stories.

Patron Saint of Travellers and More

By the 7th century, churches and monasteries across Europe bore Christopher’s name. His veneration spread widely in the Middle Ages, when he was declared the patron saint of travellers.

Over time, his protection has extended beyond those travelling on foot or by horse. Today, he is also the patron saint of:

  • Sailors, pilots, and air-crew
  • Drivers and transport workers
  • Gardeners
  • Children leaving home for the first time

St. Christopher is also invoked for protection against lightning, storms, epilepsy, toothache, and other misfortunes. His feast day is celebrated on July 25th each year.

The Meaning of St. Christopher Medals

Small images of St. Christopher have long been carried as tokens of safety. Worn around the neck, on a bracelet, or even kept in cars and luggage, the medal symbolises a prayer for safe passage and divine protection.

In modern times, St. Christopher necklaces and pendants are worn not only by Christians but also by those who see them as a symbol of protection on adventures. As well as being worn by travellers, athletes, and even fashion lovers wear St Christopher Silver Jewellery.
